This should have been the first post on this site because this should be the first part of your internet marketing plan.

What is it you ask? Keyword research.

Before you buy a domain name, setup a blog, start getting backlinks or even write your first post. You should know the keywords you are trying to target. Here are some things you should know:

1) Number of searches your keywords receive per month.
2) The number of pages indexed for your keywords.
3) How many backlinks the top ten Site have.
4) where these links come from and if they are anchored with the keywords
5) How much Google is paying per click and how much affiliates are paying per action.

All these and more will play a big part in your Internet marketing plans and the way you build your Site and how you write your content. Internet marketer must know how to research the niche that you are planning to build a Site for it is the first step.
Let me explain…

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE THE NUMBERS ARE NOT EXACT.

Let say your main keyword is “Glass”.
The number of searches “Glass” receives per month will tell you how big the niche is and if it is worth building a Site for. If your main keyword “Glass” receives 10,000 searches on average per month and you do all the work to get to the top of the SERP’s, you might only get half of these searches if you are lucky. That would be about 5,000 hits to your glass blog every month .

Let’s not forget your longtail keywords “Glass repair service, Glass cutting tools” these get about 2,000 searches each and again you are not likely to receive more than half if you get to the top of the SERP’s for them. Now you have 7,000 hits coming to your Site per month.

Now, getting to the top of Google would be your next concern. You have to know how many pages are indexed in Google for your main keyword and all your longtails. If your main keyword has 1,000,000 pages indexed than you have to beat all these pages to get to the top and same for your longtails.

The number of backlinks the top ten Sites have for the page they have at the top will let you know how many links you need to beat them. The quality of the links they have coming to their page. If the pages linking to them have high Page Rank and if they are using the keywords as the anchor text of the links and only a few links on that page than it will be hard to get pass them, on the other hand if the links are of low quality on low PR pages with no keyword anchor text and many links on the page to other Sites then it will be a lot easier.

Google’s Adword tool can tell you how much a keyword is worth. If the words “Directv Deals” it going for $5 per click then you can expect to get anywhere from 1/2 to 1/4 of that $5. That would be $2.5 to $1.5 per click from you site. If you choose to go with affiliate programs and you can find one that pays $3 per action (THESE ARE ALL EXAMPLES) meaning every time someone from your site completes the the required action you get $3.

Let’s put it all together now. You are getting 7,000 visitors to your site on a monthly basis and the average conversion rate is between 3% and 5% so we’ll just say your getting 4%. So, 4% of 7,000 is 280 visitors clicking on your links and you are getting $1.5 per click that would equal to $420 per month (AGAIN THIS IS AN EXAMPLE).

Now you know:
1) How many hits you can expect.
2) How hard it will be to get to the to.
3) How many links it will take to get you to the top and what kind of links you will need.
4) How much you can expect to get paid.
5) The keywords you should have in your domain name.
It will be much easier to build your site and write keyword filled content.

There is more to Keyword research, but this is a Internet marketers Blog for beginners so we will leave the advance stuff for later. Build a foundation by learning the basics first this is always the best way to build a business.

Keyword research is the first step when building a blog. It will give you a quick insite into the niche you are looking to target. Take the time and do the research or you will be flying blind and have to play catch up later.
